A figure walks a low plank bridge out over still water, and the far end simply dissolves into mist. You cannot see where it leads — and that not-seeing is the whole piece. Drawn in raw black ink on warm cream paper, in the spirit of classical Japanese sumi-e, where what is left empty carries as much as what is marked. The bridge gives you somewhere to stand; the fog gives you everywhere you cannot. This is yūgen — the quiet awareness of a depth you can sense but never quite reach. A piece for a wall that marks a threshold, a passage from one part of the day to the next.

THE PHILOSOPHY

This piece is rooted in three intersecting Japanese principles:

  • Yūgen (幽玄) — the profound, mysterious sense of a depth beyond words
  • Ma (間) — the eloquence of negative space
  • Wabi-sabi (侘寂) — finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence

Each print is designed not as decoration, but as a small invitation to pause.
