Vermilion against mist. A Japanese pagoda rendered in crimson and charcoal sumi-e ink — the red of temple lacquer rising out of a wash of grey, alive with the energy of the brushstroke. Where the rest of the Sacred Series holds its silence in ink and shadow, this one carries warmth: the colour of a place still lived-in, still visited, where prayers have been offered for centuries. Created in the classical Japanese sumi-e tradition — nothing refined, nothing softened, everything essential. For a wall that wants presence, and a single note of colour to carry it.

THE PHILOSOPHY

This piece is rooted in three intersecting Japanese principles:

  • Akai (赤) — vermilion, the sacred colour of the torii gate and the temple, marking a threshold between the everyday and the holy
  • Mono no aware (物の哀れ) — the bittersweet awareness of impermanence
  • Ma (間) — the eloquence of negative space

Each print is designed not as decoration, but as a small invitation to pause.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve color over time
  • Frame behind UV-protective glass for archival display
  • Handle by edges with clean hands
  • Store flat or framed; do not roll for extended periods
