The fox lifts its head toward a full moon, and its tails rise with it — smoke becoming light, drifting up until they dissolve into the pale disc of the moon itself. Drawn in raw black ink and fine line on warm cream paper, in the spirit of classical Japanese sumi-e, many tails flowing upward into mist and moon. This is mujō — impermanence, the truth that nothing holds still. In Japanese art the moon has long been the emblem of it: full tonight, gone by morning, endlessly returning and leaving. The fox seems to know, and to be gazing anyway.
