A bare tree, bent by years of wind, and beneath it a figure small enough to be almost nothing. The tree has stood through everything; the person is only passing through. Drawn in raw black ink on warm cream paper, gestural and spare, in the spirit of classical sumi-e — nothing softened, nothing decorative, everything essential. This is mono no aware — the tender awareness that nothing stays, and that the moment is precious because of it. A piece that settles a room rather than fills it.

This piece is rooted in three intersecting Japanese principles:

  • Mono no aware (物の哀れ) — the gentle awareness of impermanence
  • Ma (間) — the eloquence of negative space
  • Wabi-sabi (侘寂) — finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence
