Five round petals open around a burst of fine cream stamens. This is the ume, the Japanese plum blossom crest (kamon). In Japan the plum is the first flower to bloom as winter turns to spring, and it has long stood for learning and good fortune.

This print shows it in solid black on cream paper, with the stamens drawn in thin lines that reward a closer look. It's simple enough for a small wall and bold enough to stand out on a large one.
