A small figure rests on a low rock surrounded by water, with empty cream paper opening out in every direction. The figure is the still point; the emptiness is the world turning around it. Drawn in raw black ink on warm cream paper, in the spirit of classical sumi-e, built almost entirely on negative space. This is ma — the Japanese understanding that the space between things is not nothing, but the interval that lets everything else mean something. A grounding piece for a room that asks for focus.
