A figure stands where the land gives way to water, looking out, a faint reflection beneath. Most of the page is left empty — and that emptiness is the most beautiful part of it. Rendered in soft ink and wash on warm cream paper, in the spirit of classical Japanese sumi-e. This is yohaku-no-bi, the beauty of the unpainted: in ink art the empty space is not background but a chosen, weighted presence, here giving the lone figure room simply to be. Calm and neutral in tone, made for a quiet sanctuary.

This piece is rooted in three intersecting Japanese principles:

  • Yohaku-no-bi (余白の美) — the beauty of deliberately empty space
  • Ma (間) — the eloquence of negative space
  • Wabi-sabi (侘寂) — finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence
