A single paper lantern rests on still, dark water, its warm light echoed in the ripples spreading gently around it. One small glow, and all the quiet dark around it. Drawn in deep indigo ink, in the spirit of classical Japanese sumi-e, built almost entirely on negative space. This is ma — the understanding that empty space is not nothing, but the interval that lets the one small light mean something. A minimal, calming piece.

This piece is rooted in three intersecting Japanese principles:

  • Seijaku (静寂) — the active calm of silence
  • Wabi-sabi (侘寂) — finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence
